Mrs. Mullins' Wine

Mrs Mullins’ recipe · The Tinfully Family

Let set 3 to 4 days, then six weeks before bottling

Ingredients

  • 2 measures berries, mashed
  • 1 measure water
  • 3½ pounds sugar

Method

  1. Tie a cloth over the crock.
  2. Let set three or four days.
  3. Strain through flannel.
  4. Let set six weeks and bottle.
  5. Put a board over the crock when you put the sugar in.

The card also has a second, unrelated and only partly legible recipe written below the wine instructions, seemingly for a spiced raisin cake: 1 1/2 cups sugar, 3/4 cup lard or butter, 2 eggs, 1 cup raisins (floured) and 1/2 cup of the soaking liquid, 1/2 cup sour cream or buttermilk (with water), 1/2 teaspoon soda, 2 1/2 spoons cumin, 2 1/2 spoons allspice, 2 spoons mace or nutmeg, enough flour to make a soft batter, and a level spoon of soda dissolved in water.

Words as written on the card, units spelled out, nothing reworded. Read from the card by Tinfully.
