Tins and cards

What is a tin?

One family's recipes, with whatever was tucked in among them. You own some tins and belong to others; every tin has its own family.

How do I add a recipe?

Tap Add recipe, the red button at the end of the bar, and photograph the card. When it says Got it, tap Next card for the next recipe, Back of this card if the recipe goes on over the back, or Done. Tinfully reads each card in the tin, typed or handwritten, and files it as a recipe you can cook from. You can fix any word later.

What counts as a recipe?

One recipe, even when it runs over the back or onto another card. Photos of people or food, and recipes you save from other families, don't count.

How do I keep Tinfully on my phone?

Put its icon on your home screen, next to your other apps; there is nothing to download. Start on your Tins page (tap Tins in the bottom bar), so the icon opens there and is named Tinfully. On an iPhone, in Safari, tap the three dots at the bottom right, beside the address, then Share (on an older iPhone, Share, the box with an arrow, is already in the bar at the bottom). Scroll down the list and tap Add to Home Screen, leave Open as Web App switched on, then tap Add. If an icon you already made opens a recipe or has the wrong name, press and hold it, remove it, and add it again from the Tins page. On an Android phone, tap the menu (three dots) and then Add to Home screen or Install app. After that, the tin icon opens Tinfully full screen, in the tin you had open last.

How do I delete a tin?

Open the tin, tap Settings, and scroll to the bottom: Delete this tin and everything in it. Only the tin's owner sees it, and it cannot be undone: the cards, the words, the memories, and everyone's access all go. In a tin someone else owns, the same place says Leave this tin instead.

I uploaded a photograph by mistake.

Tinfully checks first. Added to a recipe, a photograph of a person or a dish goes in with that recipe's memories, unread and uncounted. Added to the tin on its own, it is turned away and nothing is kept, because a photograph goes with a recipe. If it got a card wrong, open the photo under Photos & stories and choose Move it to the recipe's cards.

How do I move or copy a recipe to another tin?

Open the recipe, tap More at the top, then Move it to another tin. The whole recipe goes, its cards, memories, name, and notes, and nothing stays behind. Only the tin's owner can move a recipe or a card out of a tin; it shows when you have another tin you can add to. Everyone else in the tin can use Save a copy to one of my tins, in the same place: the original stays where it is, and the copy is marked with where it came from. To move a single card that was filed under the wrong recipe, tap Recipe cards, tap the card, then More.

The photo is sideways, or there is too much table in it.

Every card and every memory has Turn and Crop in the row under its picture: Recipe cards for a card (tap the card), Photos & stories for a photo. The reading and the book follow the new crop.

How do I take good photos of old cards?

Flat, in daylight, straight above, no shadow from your hand. Tinfully straightens the card and finds its edges; you can fix the crop under Recipe cards: tap the card, then Crop.

Caring for old recipe cards
How do I find a recipe?

Inside a tin, the search field above the recipes looks through every word on every card, spelling mistakes and all. Search in the bar looks across every tin you belong to, and points you to the recipes other families have made public.

Reading and fixing

Tinfully read a word wrong.

Open the recipe and tap Fix a word, beside Ingredients. It opens the card with its words ready to edit. Saving also updates the recipe. Words Tinfully wasn't sure about are marked; a number that doesn't add up gets a warning on the ingredient line.

What are Tidied, As written, and Metric?

Tidied spells out the units, nothing reworded. As written is the card's own line, spelling and all. Metric shows grams and milliliters beside American measures; they're worked out, not on the card, so treat them as a guide.

Where does the date come from?

From the card when it says. Set the real one with Who & when, under the recipe's name: a year is enough, a month and day if you know them.

Who wrote it, and where is it from?

Under the recipe's name, Who & when holds the author, the publisher for a clipping, and the date. A recipe from a published book or magazine can be shared with the family and by link, but not made public; Tinfully says so where it applies.

Memories

What are memories?

The photos, letters, notes, and stories that go with a recipe: a photo of it cooked, a photo of the person, a note or letter, a story in a few lines. They live under the recipe's Photos & stories and go in the cookbook with it.

Why does it ask “Anything that goes with it?”

Once, the first time a recipe is opened after it's been read. Not now means it never asks again on that recipe; Photos & stories stays open for whenever you have something.

How do I delete a memory?

Delete sits at the end of the row under the picture in Photos & stories, in red. It leaves the tin and the cookbook at once; you can undo it there for 30 days, after which it is gone for good. The owner can delete anything; everyone else, what they added.

The cookbook

What is the Print tab?

Two things today: your cookbook, and Print at home for any recipe on your own printer. Make your cookbook opens the book itself, page by page as it will print: the cover, an introduction in your own words, a page of family photos, then every recipe set in type in chapters, with its card and memories beside it.

Printing and the other formats
How do I change the cover?

Above the cover: tap a style, or Your photo and then one of your photos. Change edits the title, the line under it, and who edited the book. The cover redraws as you go.

Can I leave a recipe or a photo out of the book?

Yes. Above every recipe's page: the card and each memory are switches, tap one to leave it out; Hide recipe takes the whole recipe out and leaves a marker in its place with Show recipe. The family photos page has Hide page. Nothing is deleted; the tin keeps everything.

What are Generous and Compact?

Two ways to set the same book. Generous gives every card a page of its own facing the recipe. Compact tucks a single card and its cooked photo onto the recipe's page and keeps a facing page for recipes with more, so the book is shorter. The price of a bound copy follows the page count, so Compact is the cheaper book.

Can I order a printed copy?

Not yet. When ordering opens, the owner says the cookbook is ready and anyone in the tin can order a copy. Any single recipe prints at home today: tap Print on the recipe.

Family

How do I invite family?

Open the tin and tap Invite, then Invite someone. Type their name or email and tap Send the invitation. More choices sets which tins, what they can do, and a note. Each person gets one email.

Invite someone, or send the look-only link?

To bring family into the tin, use the Invite tab, then Invite someone. Each person invited gets their own link; if the email does not reach them, or you only have their phone number, tap Text or send their link beside their name and send it yourself. The look-only link, on the Let someone look tile, is different: it lets a friend read the recipes without an account, and it never joins anyone to the tin.

What can the family do?

The owner can change anything. Someone who can add can photograph cards and fix words on what they added. Someone who can read can open, cook from, and print everything. Change it on the Invite tab.

Sharing and printing

How do I share a recipe outside the family?

Tap Share on the recipe. The tin's owner gets Share it with a link; anyone else in the tin can ask the owner. The owner can stop a link at any time, and the old link stops working at once.

How do I print one recipe?

Print, on the recipe. Choose the tidied recipe or exactly as written, photos in or out, and it comes out on one page with a line saying which version it is.

Can I save someone else's public recipe?

Yes. On a public recipe page, Save to my tin copies it into your tin with a line saying where it came from. It doesn't count against your pages.

Your words, always yours

Can I take everything out?

Yes, any time. Every tin's Settings has Download all the recipes, and Other formats: Markdown, a spreadsheet, JSON, and IIIF for archives. Nothing is ever locked in.

Plans

What does it cost?

The first five recipes are free. Then you pay for the recipes you add, from $19, and a dollar a month after the first year keeps your tins open. The family never pays.

What if I stop paying?

Adding stops. After 30 days your tins are put away: you can still read and download everything, and nothing is deleted for a year.
